Angela Yiavasis, Lawyer

Angela graduated from the University of Otago in 2014 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communications; completing her final semester of law at the University of Amsterdam.

Angela was admitted in 2015 and has previously clerked for barristers and worked with a wide range of businesses in managing their legal compliance obligations.
Angela has been at Ford Sumner since January 2017, and works across the Firm’s various practice areas, including:
  • ACC and medico legal
  • Employment
  • Legal compliance
  • Dispute resolution
Examples of work include:
  • Accident Compensation Corporation (“ACC”) appeal submissions since January 2017 in relation to entitlement to cover, weekly compensation and entitlements,  cost of surgery, independence allowance, transport assistance, treatment injury, gradual process injuries, lump sum compensation entitlements, vocational independence and whole person impairment, independence allowance, individual rehabilitation plans, causation and weekly compensation overpayment;
  • Representing ACC in judicial teleconferences;
  • Representing ACC in Review Hearings 2017-Current;
  • Representing and appearing as junior counsel for ACC in the District Court;
  • Representing a number of liquidators with respect to the recovery of payment(s) made by companies during the period prior to liquidation, including debt recovery; and appearing in the High Court in respect of the same;
  • Enforcing numerous judgments where necessary with attachment and charging orders and/or bankruptcy/liquidation proceedings;
  • Representing a number of corporate and individual clients in resolving significant disputes;  
  • Advising a variety of corporate clients on managing their legal compliance obligations, including health and safety legislation;
  • Advising corporate and individual clients in relation to a variety of employment issues, including restraints of trade, entitlements, restructuring and redundancies, performance management, disciplinary action, and termination of employment;
  • Appearing at mediation and assisting clients to resolve employment relationship problems; and
  • Drafting and advising on various types of employment agreements.
In her spare time Angela enjoys travelling, being a spectator at various sports grounds, playing netball, and expanding her foodie knowledge and palate.
